Language learning here and in other countries
You surely have heard that Hungary’s rank at language learning and teaching is fairly low, compared to the world’s or the European Union’s standard.
What’s the reason? Hungarian language itself, wrong teaching methods, or general bad attitude? In this article we make an attempt to find out.
Is it harder to learn languages if you’re Hungarian?
Linguists and scientists often point ot that Hungarian, in terms of word formation, pronounciation, grammar and syntax is very much different than any other European language. Building up a sentence works in a different order, so when learning a new language we learn a new way of thinking, too.
It takes a lot less effort for a Swedish or a Dutch to learn English or German. Holding the level of knowledge is also easier. This is exactly why it would be important to motivate the Hungarian learner at the very beginning, e.g. with playful tasks, learning games, in order not to lose interest. Teaching Latin at high schools is also an option the government is seriously considering, as Latin can help acquisite other Indoeuropean languages, but the time and effort spent on such activity might not pay off.
Language learning in international comparision
According to Eurostat and the official census, 24,7 of Hungary’s entire population can communicate on one of the five big western world languages. This is very low compared to the surrounding, mostly Slavic countries: this level in the Czech Republic is 45%, 33% in Poland, 30% in Romania, and outstanding in Slovenia: 75%. This data might shake the theory of Hungarian language being guilty for our low performance, since none of the five world languages belong to the Slavic language family.
Ways to improve, possibilities
It is true that language teaching in Hungary does not really apply the new methods and technologies developed in recent years. One example is the interactive board, which is widely used in western countries, but there are also many other options.
